Vegan Mango Lassi – a three-ingredient delicious mango lassi / Indian style yogurt smoothie made with dairy-free cashew milk yogurt. A dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free vegan drink perfect for any meal!
I love mangoes, and I have quite a few mango recipes on my blog, but it has taken me this long to post the basic lassi recipe here. I do have frozen lassi bars recipe, though. :-)
As I mentioned on my avocado lassi post, lassi is a yogurt-based drink from the Indian Subcontinent. Today I am going to share a vegan lassi recipe with plant-based yogurt alternative.
Why Vegan Lassi?
I know my blog has both vegan and vegetarian recipes, and you might all wonder why opted for plant-based yogurt instead of regular dairy-based one?
Ok, I am not following any dairy-free diet, but I am reducing my dairy-intake for sure. I had some health issues in 2018, and I was having severe acne issues as well. I have shared this story (acne shots are super painful) in my aloe vera juice post.
Many of my friends were suggesting to reduce my dairy intake. No, I am not lactose intolerant. :-) I did consult with my primary care physician. While he did not buy this theory, he didn’t stop me from following it as well. He asked me to take proper supplements.
It was then that I started reading the book “Reversing Diabetes in 21 days by Dr. Nandita Shah” and learned the role of dairy in diabetes. (No I am not diabetic but it runs in the family) So I decided to reduce my dairy intake. Quite a few lifestyle changes and things are far better now health-wise, and because of these lifestyle changes, you are finding more vegan recipes on my blog like vegan ven pongal, vegan murukku, vegan sheera and many more.
I don’t strictly follow a dairy-free diet but reduced my consumption a lot. Again portion control is the key. We started using oats milk and almond milk for our smoothies and porridge. I will share some recipes soon.
Now coming to the blog front, let me be clear, you will still see dairy-based recipes on my blog. My blog will always be a vegetarian & vegan one.
It looks like I have deviated a lot from the main topic mango lassi, and now let’s get back to it.
Plant-based yogurt-
I have never tasted plant-based yogurt. So before getting my hands on, I want to taste it first. So I went with store-bought yogurt, and I picked cashew-based one. Once I get the hang of making plant-based yogurt, I will share it here.
The three main ingredients for mango lassi & alternatives-
Mangoes – Being in the US, it’s hard to get different Indian mango varieties. Even though we get Alphonso in the Indian groceries, they cost a bomb. I always opt for the local types that we get here, and our personal favorite is the ataulfo variety. And that’s what I used for this lassi. Any less fibrous sweet mango variety works well for this lassi.
You can also use store-bought Alphonso puree, but of course, it has some preservatives and added sugar. So keep that in mind.
I used two ataulfo mangoes for this recipe. You can add more for mango-ish lassi.
Yogurt – I used cashew milk yogurt. But you can use any yogurt of your choice. If you are not particular about vegan, regular dairy-based yogurt works well. You can pick reduced-fat yogurt but go for plain or non-flavored yogurt. Mango shines well with plain yogurt.
Cardamom Powder – That’s the flavor enhancer I used. You can use saffron strands or rose essence etc. to flavor it up. I will soon share the recipe for making cardamom powder at home.
If you use cardamom, break the cardamom pods (you can crush them like garlic with the back of the knife) and take out the seeds. We need seeds for this smoothie. Don’t discard the green cardamom skin. You add it to your tea or plain drinking water for added flavor.
Water – You might need ½ to 1 cup of water according to your consistency preference. Some add milk, but I prefer plain water.
As you can see, I did not add any sweeteners. My mangoes were sweet, but you can add sweeteners of your choice.
Mango lassi recipe with step-wise pictures.
- Peel the mango skin and cut the flesh into chunks. I got about 270 grams of mango flesh.
- In a blender, add the mango pulp, yogurt, and the cardamom powder.
- Blend it thoroughly. I used my Blendtec and used the smoothie setting.
- Now check the consistency and add water. I added about ½ cup of water and pulsed it again.
- Garnish it and serve right away. I garnished it with nuts and dried rose petals.
Recipe Notes-
- I usually don’t add any ice cubes. But you can add ice-cubes if you prefer your lassi cold. You can also refrigerate, but lassi thickens as it stays, so pulse it again or add cold water and thin it down a bit before serving.
- Add sugar or sweeteners of your choice if required.
- You can use the yogurt of your choice.
- Instead of cardamom, you can add saffron or rose syrup/essence.
