Happy Thanksgiving. It feels like I wrote this Thankful Post recently but its been a year and touchwood whatever I mentioned there hasn’t changed at all.( Once again thanks to all :-) Oggarane in Kannada means tadka and in Tamil it’s the thaalipu. By now you would have guessed what this recipe all about is; yes it’s the super simple tadka rice (Kannada style) and one of the popular and easy Karnataka recipes.
I think I have mentioned this in my blog before. I am a Kannadiga but born and bought up in Tamil Nadu. It seems like we all migrated and settled in various parts of TN during Hoysala period. Now you know why I have a separate category for Ugadi. I wish I could have learnt the Kannada script from my aunt but missed it. I do speak but M speaks better Kannada than me. My cooking or rather our cooking is a mix of both Tamil and Kannada style. Now after coming to US it has become a blend of all vegetarian styles. This oggarane anna is one of the recipes that my mom prepares every now and then with left over rice.
We add lot of hing and that enhances the flavor of this rice. I just love it with papad or pickle. But this goes well with gojju and Chutney too. We had this with Dhaniya Thuvaiyal this time. Sometimes I add grated carrots and onion to this rice to give some additional flavor but you can add veggies of your choice. For this recipe, I am preparing the simple one without any veggies. I am using dried green chillies/mor milagai and that adds the spice level.
Ingredients:
- Left over rice: 2 cups
- Oil – 2 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 2 tsps
- Channa dhal – 2 tsps
- Urad dhal – 2 tsps
- Hing – 2 tsps
- Curry leaves – 1 strand
- Mor Milagai or Sun Dried Green Chillies– 3
- Salt – 1 tsp
Steps:
- Heat the pan or kadai and add oil.
- Once the oil is hot add the mustard seeds, channa dhal and urad dhal.
- As they start to splutter add the dried chillies, hing and curry leaves.
- The dried chillies should get fried and then turn off the heat.
- Now add the left over rice and salt and mix well. That’s it Oggarane Anna is ready.
