Mango Mastani – Rich and creamy and thick mango milkshake topped with ice cream, dry fruits, and nuts! A summer-special milkshake with the goodness of mangoes!

mango milkshake with spoon insde served on two tall glasses

Milkshakes and lassi during summer are very common in our household. This year paneer soda joined the bandwagon as well. I love to combine fresh seasonal fruits in our lassi and milkshakes. You can call my lassi as yogurt and fruit smoothies and my milkshakes as ice cream and fruit smoothies. :-) That’s how I make them.

Now coming back to today’s recipe, this mango mastani is a popular drink in Pune, Maharashtra. The name reason behind this drink is quite fascinating. Some say that this drink got its name after Peshwa Baji Rao’s wife, Mastani. At the same time, India.com says that when everyone relished this drink, they appreciated the drink by saying “mast” – Hindi word meaning super, cool, awesome. Later it became mastani.

I don’t want to dig too much into the research. Let’s just enjoy this rich and creamy drink. My recipe is slightly different from the ones that you find on the internet. I just used what I had in hand and prepared this mastani.

Most of the recipes call for glazed cherries to garnish, but I used black grapes to garnish. You can use berries also.

    Adding raj bhog ice cream-

Also, while preparing the milkshake, I added some ice cream as well. That made this milkshake very creamy and thick. I used the store-bought raj bhog ice cream. I would recommend any Indian-flavored ice creams and trust me, folks, it just intensifies the flavor multifold. But this step is entirely optional.

As I added the ice cream, I did not add any ice cubes. Because of this ice cream, I did not add any other flavoring ingredients like cardamom and sugar.

The recipe is very straightforward. Just two steps are involved-

    • Blend the mango, milk, and ice cream.
    • Pour it in serving glasses and top it with ice cream and garnish it with nuts, tutti frutti, and fruits. Serve it right away. You need both spoon and straw for this drink. :-)

You can adjust the ingredient measure according to your preference. But don’t reduce the mango measure though – more the mango, more the flavor.

PS- This is a vibrant and calorie-loaded drink. You can very well reduce the serving amount and split this into four servings.

Here is the quick video for mango mastani. Do check it out and also please subscribe to my channel.

    How to make mango mastani-

    • In a blender, add the cut mango, ice cream (if using) and milk and blend. I used my Blendtec and used the smoothie option.
    • Now pour this mango milkshake into the glasses. Fill ¾ of the glass so that there is sufficient space for the toppings.
    • Add two scoops of vanilla ice cream on each glass.
    • Now add the nuts, tutti frutti, chopped mango, and grapes equally on both the glasses.
    • Serve right away! You need a spoon for this recipe!

    Recipe Notes-

    • While making the milkshake instead of raj bhog ice cream, you can add vanilla or any malai ice cream. I would recommend skipping chocolate-based ice creams, though.
    • If you skip the ice cream, while making the milkshake, add sugar if needed and increase the milk to 1 cup. You can also add saffron or cardamom for further flavor.
    • Garnish with nuts and fruits of your choice. As mentioned in the post, I used black grapes instead of cherries.
