A delicious popsicle or ice pops with kala khatta syrup. Here are my sweet and sour semi-homemade kala khatta popsicles that are oh-so-simple and oh-so-delicious.

kala khatta popsicles placed on a plate with ice with molds on the side

As I mentioned in the rose popsicle post, we all love popsicles. Nothing can beat the joy of slurping the ice pops on a hot summer day.

The term kala khatta makes me nostalgic and brings back all my childhood summer memories. The taste of the tangy ice-golas that we get from the nearby shop still lingers in my mouth.

When my friend R shared some kala khatta ice golas, my search for these delicious popsicles began again, and that’s how I ended with this semi-homemade kala khatta popsicle. I know it’s semi-homemade, but it’s delicious, and all you need is some water and syrup. You need to mix and freeze. That’s it.

Now, what’s the big deal about this kala khatta syrup?

Kala means black color in Hindi, and khatta means tangy. Black jamuns or black plums that are sweet and sour goes in the preparation of this syrup. In Tamil, we call black jamuns as Nava pazham or naaval pazham. I have relished this a lot in Periyakulam, and it’s suitable for diabetic patients too.

When I can make kokum sharbat from scratch, you may all wonder why not kala khatta syrup. The main reason is I don’t get fresh jamuns here. I do find frozen ones, but yet to experiment with it.

The store-bought syrup not only comes in handy for this popsicle, but you can make some quick sharbat by mixing it with water and flavoring it up further jal jeera masala or with chaat masala. It’s one of the syrups that I have handy during summers to whip up some quick beverages.

Watch me make the other three popsicles-

Along with kala khatta, I also made rose syrup popsicles and black currant popsicles as well. Do check it out.

Let’s see how to make this super simple kala khatta popsicle-

    • Mix the syrup and water and make sure they blend well.
    • Now pour this kala khatta syrup mix in your favorite molds and freeze until set or for atleast 4 to 6 hours.
To easily remove it from the mold, let it sit on a bowl filled with water for 20 to 30 seconds and slowly take them out. Alternatively, you can run the popsicle mold in the tap water and take them out slowly.
    • That’s it. Yummy semi-homemade popsicles are ready.
    • Slurp and Enjoy!!!!

    Recipe Notes:

    • If required, add about 1 or 2 tsps of sugar. And if you want to add more zing, add a tsp of jal jeera masala or chaat masala.
