Flaxseed paruppu podi – A healthy rice accompaniment prepared with flaxseed & toor dal. Relish it with rice with a dollop of ghee for a hearty meal.

    FlaxSeedLentilsPowder

I love to relish my rice with spice powders like paruppu podi, karuvepillai podi, thengai podi, and recently I started to experiment with spice powders with flaxseeds, and here is one. I made it more like paruppu podi with a combination of toor dal and flaxseeds.

All you need to do is dry roast the ingredients and grind it. It has a shelf life of about ten days when refrigerated. Rice and this podi with a dollop of ghee served with papad is a complete meal by itself.

    Storing Flaxseeds:

    FlaxSeeds

Before getting into the recipe, I would like to mention the storage tips for flaxseeds. We all know that flaxseed has a high quantity of Omega-3 fatty acids, and in turn, it helps lower the LDL cholesterol levels. The same fatty acids reduce the shelf life of the flaxseed. When flax seed goes bad, it is called rancid. When their fatty acids breakdown, flax seeds become rancid. So, either store the flax seeds in the fridge or the freezer.

How do you find if a flax seed has turned into a Rancid?

Try tasting a few seeds. If it has a mild nutty flavor, then it’s okay. If it has a strong odor and bitter, it has turned rancid. The funny thing is, I started to eat flaxseed for checking its bitterness, and now I got so used to it and love eating them raw.

    FlaxSeedPodi

Now let’s see how to make this flaxseed paruppu podi. We don’t need any oil for this recipe.

How to make flaxseed paruppu podi for rice?

    Ingredients: [No Oil Required]

    • Flaxseed – ¼ cup
    • Toor dal – ¼ cup
    • Peppercorns – 1 tsp
    • Red chili – 2 to 3, to taste
    • Salt – 2 tsps or to taste.

    Steps:

    • Heat the kadai. Once it becomes hot, add the toor dal and flaxseed.

    FlaxSeedPodiStep1

    • In medium heat, dry roast for a couple of minutes. Then add the peppercorns and red chilies and dry roast till the toor dal becomes slightly brown. Don’t roast for more than 5 to 7 minutes.

    FlaxSeedPodiStep2

    • Let the mixture cool and grind them without adding any water but with salt and store it in an airtight container.

How to serve this flaxseed podi?

I usually like it with rice. Add one or two tbsps of this ground flaxseed podi to 1 cup of cooked rice. Add some ghee or gingelly oil and mix. Relish it with a side of any dry or gravy curry or with papad.

    FlaxSeedWithRice

    Notes:

    • Add salt after grinding the powder and pulse it once after adding the salt.
    • Don’t over roast the flaxseed mixture.
    • Adjust the red chilies and pepper according to your taste preference. You can skip pepper and add more red chilies also.
