Cream of Celery Soup – A chunky and creamy soup with the sneaked-in goodness of celery prepared in the crockpot. Check out the video recipe and how to cook this soup in the pressure cooker and also other variations below.

crockpot celery soupCelery is one vegetable that I always find it hard to add to our regular day to day diet. (Recently I tried celery poriyal which turned out to be a huge hit and stay tuned for the recipe. I will be posting it on IMC though. ) So I always include them(a little) in all my soup recipes. A couple of years ago, I got a chance to try cream of celery soup and cream of asparagus soup.

This celery soup gave me the idea of including a whole lot of celery in the regular meal. So I started making them regularly. And here is the version that became a hit in our family errr precisely approved by vaandu.

    Cream of Celery Soup Variations:

Earlier, I used to grind/puree the celery and make it as very smooth and silky soup. But as kiddo started to acquire the taste, I started making it as a chunky soup and skipped the grinding process. So if you are trying it for the first time, then grinding or pureeing it will help a lot in getting used to the taste.

Also, as he started to liking spicy food, I added a little extra pepper. You can always adjust it according to your spice preference or add more cream to balance the spice. Check out my cauliflower soup recipe to know why I make soups sometimes bit spicy. :-)

When I planned to prepare this recipe, I realized I did not use my crockpot this entire year, hence I decided to make this in the crockpot. But I have provided the pressure cooker version also. The significant advantage of a crockpot and instant pot are, you don’t need to babysit the recipes. ;-)

I love my pressure cooker too. :-) Check out the beets soup prepared in the pressure cooker, lentil soup cooked in instant pot and now celery soup in the crockpot. Here is the quick video. Subscribe to my youtube channel and stay tuned for new recipes.

Cream of Celery Soup | Crockpot Celery Soup

A chunky and creamy soup with the sneaked-in goodness of celery prepared in the crockpot.

    crockpot celery soup

    Ingredients:

    • Chopped Onion – ½ cup
    • Chopped Celery, including the greens – 3 cups
    • Potato – 1 (peeled and cubed)
    • Salt – 1 tsp
    • Vegetable Broth – 2 cups
    • Thyme – ½ tsp
    • Pepper – 1.5 tsp, approx. Adjust according to your preference
    • All-purpose flour – 2 tbsps
    • Water – 3 tbsps
    • Cream – ¼ cup
    • Butter – as required to serve

    Steps:

    Crockpot Method:

    • Add the chopped onion, celery, potato to the crockpot.
    • Add the vegetable broth, salt, thyme, and pepper. Mix it and set the crockpot on low heat mode and cook for 4 hours.
    • After 4 hours, open the lid carefully and using a potato masher, mash all the celery mix. You can grind them as well.
    • Mix the all-purpose flour and water and add this to the crockpot soup mix.
    • Stir in the cream as well.
    • Cook this on high mode for 30 minutes.
    • And that’s it. Cream of Celery soup is ready.
    • Top it up with butter and serve hot.

    Pressure Cooker Method:

    • Add the chopped onion, celery, potato to the pressure pan or cooker.
    • Add the vegetable broth, salt, thyme, and pepper.
    • Mix and let it cook for up to 3 whistles and then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 20 more minutes. Ignore the whistle count during this step.
    • Let the pressure release and using a potato masher, mash all the celery mix. You can grind the celery mix as well.
    • Transfer this to the big pot/pan and let it simmer over low heat.
    • Mix the all-purpose flour and water and add this to the crockpot soup mix.
    • Stir in the cream as well.
    • Let the soup mix simmer for at least 30 minutes.
    • And that’s it. Cream of Celery soup is ready.
    • Top it up with butter and serve hot.

    crockpot celery soup

    Recipe Notes:

    • Adjust the salt and spice as per your preference.
    • Instead of mashing the celery mix, you can grind it as well.
    • You can replace cream with low-fat milk or 2% milk.
    • We prefer thyme flavor in this soup. But you can add fresh thyme, oregano or sage or the dried herb mix too.
    • You can include carrot as well, and that adds a tinge of sweetness and color to this soup.

I thought for a moment before I put in 1 1/2 teaspoons of pepper into the pot. I should have listened to myself. The recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of salt and then one and a half teaspoons of pepper; one half teaspoon of pepper is plenty. I should have tossed the mix but honey and lemon just did save it to use as a tablespoon by tablespoon additive to other dishes.

Sorry to know the spice levels didn’t work for you. We like our soup a bit spicy. My recent cauliflower soup is like that way as well. In the case of celery soup, a little bit more cream would have balanced it also. Thanks

How about using non dairy milk like almond?

Sure. Almond milk or cashew milk would work better than soy milk.

after IP, now ur crockpot recipes super kalakkal, Vidhya ! This chunky soup is tempting for the chilly weather here. For the price that celery is sold here, I think I will have to make suitable substitutes :-)

Thanks, Kalyani. I don’t know the celery price is so high in India. I bet you can replace it with mushrooms and make it cream of mushroom soup.
