The latest buzz word in the “superfoods world” is the Matcha Green Tea. All the cafe menus have Matcha based beverage these days including star bucks, and I felt where ever I go, and whatever I read, it was all about matcha and matcha. So I decided to write about it and try a simple latte with the same. Here comes my Creamy Matcha Latte.

So What is Matcha?

To explain it in simple words, Match is ground green tea. It’s as simple as that.

How is it prepared?

The green tea leaves used for matcha grows in the shade before two to three weeks of harvest. This process increases the chlorophyll level which in turn helps in the production of more amino acids(L-theanine). It also makes the tea leaves dark green. Then fine tea buds are hand-picked and, dried and stone ground to bright green matcha powder.

Why is Matcha rich in Anti-oxidants?

It has all the benefits of Green Tea(obviously), and also it has more anti-oxidants. One cup of matcha is equal to ten cups of green tea. The increased chlorophyll levels are the main reason and that what makes it into a superfood. L-Theanine apparently has a calming effect on the brain, and when combined with caffeine it calms you down without any drowsiness.

Caution:

As always too much of anything is good for nothing. A 1/2 tsp of matcha is more than enough for preparing a single serving of Latte, and that should be the daily intake value as well. Also, some studies show that there are subtle traces of lead so women who are pregnant and nursing should avoid this.

Matcha Green Tea Latte

I tried a simple Matcha Latte. I know it’s not frothy as you get in cafes, but its homemade with love for sure. :-)

 Ingredients:

  • Hot water – 1/2 cup
  • Matcha Green Tea Powder – 1 tsp
  • Sugar/Honey/Agave/Sweetener of your choice as required. (I used three tsps of raw sugar)
  • Milk – 1.5 cups

Steps:

  • Boil the water and milk in your preferred way. We don’t need it boiling though.

  • Add a tsp of the matcha green tea powder to the 1/2 cup of water and using a hand whisk or fork stir it vigorously and make sure there aren’t any lumps.

  • Add sugar and remix it.
  • Now add the warm milk and stir it nicely.

Enjoy it hot or cold as per your preference.

Notes:

  • For a hot latte, add warm milk, and with a hand, whisk mix it until frothy and serve hot.
  • For a cold latter, add warm milk and chill it or add ice cubes and serve cold.
  • Adjust the sugar as per your taste.
  • Do not add more 3/4 tsp for a single serving.

Ingredients
