After a long time, I am posting a slow cooker recipe. This dal recipe is from the Royal State of Rajasthan :-) This is also called as Panch Ratna Dal. We all know panch means five and this recipe has the goodness of 5 different kinds of dal and obviously loaded with protein. The five dals that I used are moth dal, black urad dal, channa dal, green moong dal and toor dal. Either you can take equal measures of these dals or you can adjust the mix based of your preference.

During this Christmas break we didn’t travel anywhere but did some local trips and visited friends. Pretty much stayed home and watched movies and started watxhing the new series Quantico. ;-) I didn’t have the enthusiasm to cook and went with slow cooker recipes. This recipe was given by my BFF VN who is from Rajasthan. Learnt couple more traditional recipes from her. Will post them soon. We all know toor dal, channa dal, green moong dal and black urad dal. Moth dal or moth bean was something new to me. But it is easily available in all the Indian stores here and it was not hard to find. Here is the wiki link that explains more about this dal.

This is the slow cooker that I use,

Here comes the recipe and here are the five dals that I used,

    5dals

    Ingredients:

    • Moth Dal – ¼ cup
    • Black Urad Dal – 3 tbsps
    • Channa Dal – ¼ cup
    • Green Gram Dal – ¼ cup
    • Toor Dal – ⅓ cup
    • Dal Masala – 2 tbsps (I went with the store bought arhar dal masala, read the substitute in the note section)
    • Tomatoes – 2
    • Salt – 3 tsps
    • Medium Sized Onion – 1
    • Green Chillies – 2
    • Cilantro – couple of strands
    • Water – 3 cups
    • Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
    • Ginger-Garlic Paste – 1 tbsp

    For Tempering:

    • Ghee / Oil – 2 tsps
    • Jeera / Cumin Seeds – 2 tsps
    • Hing – 1 tsp
    • Red chillies – 2 (optional)

    Steps:

    • Wash the dals and soak it for 30 minutes.
    • Meanwhile finely chop the onions, tomatoes, green chillies and cilantro.
    • Drain the water from the dal and add it to the crockpot.
    • Add the chopped onions, tomatoes, green chillies, cilantro, salt, turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste, dal masala.

    • Add three cups of water and mix well.

    Slow Cooker Panch Mel Dal

    • Set temperature to high and let it cook for 3 hours.
    • Here is how it looks after 3 hours.
    • Mash it well with potato masher or with a ladle.

    • Now in the tadka pan heat the ghee or oil.
    • Once its hot, add the cumin seeds, hind and red chillies (if using, I didn’t use them)

    Slow Cooker Panch Mel Dal

    • Add it to the dal and that’s it yummy and healthy dal is ready.

Serve it hot with rice or roti. I personally prefer it with rice and pickle like below. :-)
