Araichuvitta Vathal Kuzhambu (Vathal Kuzhambu with coconut)

This is a lip-smacking yummylicious vathal kuzhambu prepared with fresh ground coconut masala along with onions, tomatoes and sun dried fryums

  • One medium sized onion
  • Tomatoes - 2
  • Salt - 2 tsps as per taste
  • Tamarind Juice – 1 cup of juice extracted from gooseberry sized tamarind or dilute 2 tsps of tamarind paste in 1 cup of water.
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Manathakkali Vathal - 1 tsp

For Tempering

  • Oil - 2 tbsps
  • Mustard seeds - 2 tsp
  • Methi seeds - 1 tsp
  • Urad dhal - 1 tsp
  • Channa dhal - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 strand
  • Hing - 1/2 tsp

For Grinding

  • Half of the medium sized onion
  • Coconut - 3 tbsps
  • Dhaniya/Coriander seeds - 2 tsps
  • Poppy seeds - 2 tsps
  • Red chillies - 4


  • Saute one half of the medium sized onion till they translucent by adding 1 tsp of oil.
  • In the same kadai, dry roast the ingredients given under grinding.
  • Let them cool and grind them together by adding water.
  • Heat the remaining oil in the kadai.
  • Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds. As they start to splutter, add methi seeds, heeng, urad and channa dhal.
  • Now add the vathal. (I used manathakkali vathal)
  • Fry them for a minute and then add the remaining half of chopped onions and curry leaves. Let it cook till onion turns translucent.
  • Now add tomatoes, salt and turmeric powder. Mix well and cook till the tomatoes are soft.
  • Add the extracted tamarind juice Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
  • Now add the grinded masala and simmer it for about 7 minutes. (add water according to your consistency and if you are adding water, let it simmer for couple more minutes).
  • And thats it, yummy araichu vita vathal kuzhambu is ready.
