This is a simple dal tadka prepared with masoor dal and to get the daily dose of veggies in our diet, I sneaked in some broccoli. If you are not accustomed to Broccoli, this would be my best bet.
Masoor dal is the red lentils and it is one of the dals that can be cooked fast and easily and I love the flavor too. Usually I do prepare plain dal tadka and in Tamil Nadu we call it as paruppu kadaiyal. I figured out that dal tadka is the best way to sneak in the veggies for the kiddo and for ourselves too. So tried different varieties of veggie dal tadkas and here I am with our recent favorite broccoli-masoor dal tadka
Ingredients:
- Broccoli – 1 medium bunch / 10-12 florets
- Masoor dhal – 1 cup
- Garlic – 3 cloves
- Half of medium sized onion, chopped
- Jeera /cumin seeds – 2 tbsps
- Hing – 2 tsps
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Green chillies – 2 ( hubby bought some purple chillies and I used them)
- Jaggery – 1 small piece
- Oil/Ghee – 1 tbsp
- Cilantro (chopped) – 1 tbsp
- Salt – as required (I added about 1.5 tsps)
Steps:
- Pressure cook the broccoli, masoor dal with garlic. (Upto 4 whistles, we want the broccoli to break down and blend nicely)
- In a separate kadai, heat the oil/ghee.
- Once its hot, add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and hing.
- As mustard seeds start to splutter, add the green chillies and chopped onion.
- Once onion turns translucent, add the cooked dal-broccoli mixture.
- Add salt and jaggery and let it simmer for about 6-7 minutes. (depending on your consistency, add water)
- And thats it, dal broccoli is ready. Garnish it with cilantro and serve hot with rice or roti
Note:
- Adjust the dal consistency according to your preference.
- I didn’t add any turmeric, but 1/2 tsp of turmeric can be added.
- Adjust salt and spice as per your preference. Jaggery is optional.

Broccoli and Dal!! Quite new to me :)
:-) way to sneak in vegetables
Never tried masoor dal , does it taste the same as toor dal Sri ?
Pretty much. I have tried both rasam and sambhar with that. Love the sambhar (planning to post next) and rasam, I felt it is acquired taste. But its very light and cooks way to faster than toor dhal. Here I have loads of issues with toor dhal. Same brand are not the same every time I buy. Sometimes it cooks easily and sometimes not :-(
Ohh we always buy Laxmi brand toor dal and it is good. Anyways if masoor is quick then it is good for working ladies like you :-)
Let it try that brand then. I have tried Deep, and local brand but both have issues
Yep try Laxmi brand it is nice :-)
Sure Thanks :-)
