Nungu/Ice Apple Lassi with Lychee

I am back with one more lassi recipe. I have already posted Avocado Lassi and Spicy Tamarind Lassi. Here is one more sweeter lassi recipe prepared with Nungu or Ice Apple or Palm Fruit and lychee. This is a super refreshing lassi and with the dash of rose syrup it tastes heavenly and it’s a perfect summer drink.

Nungu | Ice Apple

Ice Apple or Palm Fruit is called nungu in Tamil, tadgola in Marathi and tari in Hindi.  The word “Nungu” makes me nostalgic and takes me back to my childhood in Periyakulam (PKM). Periyakulam is known as mango city and I have explained about the same in my Maavadu post. We do get loads and loads of mangoes and also Nungu and Jackfruit. These three fruits are pretty popular and I have relished all these fresh fruits every summer. Here in California, I do get good mangoes and also exported Jackfruit but no nungu :-(  Recently when I went to Ranch 99 Market, I saw the canned nungu and grabbed it right away. I know it doesn’t taste like the fresh one but still, I wanted to try. The canned ones doesn’t have the outer layer and it contains only the flesh, also the canned one was soaked in sugar syrup. Nungu is known for its coolant property and I thought why not prepare lassi with the same. But how did lychee came in?

Lychee:

I love Lychee. Period. It’s a small fruit covered with inedible pink-red-yellowish rough rind. The outer layer is rough but the inner edible flesh is so delicious and refreshing. According to Wiki, Fresh whole lychee contains a total 72 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit, an amount representing 86% of the Daily Value (DV). On average, consuming nine peeled lychee fruits would meet an adult’s daily vitamin C requirement but otherwise would supply little nutrient content. Lychees are low in saturated fat and sodium.

So when I found Lychee in the Indian Stores, I thought why not combine Lychee and Ice Apple and prepare a refreshing summer drink with yogurt and here it is,

Ingredients:

  • Ice – Apple Flesh – 1.5 cups
  • Lychee – 4
  • Sugar – 1 tbsp
  • Thick Yogurt / Hung Curd – 1 cup
  • Water – 2 to 3 tbsps
  • Rose Syrup – 2 to 3 tsps

Prep -Work

  • If you get fresh nungu, go for it. Peel the white outer skin and chop them finely.
  • If you are using canned one, filter the syrup and rinse them in running water nicely.
  • Peel the lychee outer layer and also deseed them.

Steps:

  • In a blender first puree the ice apple and lychee along with sugar and water.

Refrigerate them and serve chilled. Before serving, drizzle a tsp of rose syrup on top.

That’s it. Yummy Ice Apple and Lychee Lassi is ready.

Notes:

  • As the canned ice-apple had already sugar, I went with 1 tbsp of sugar. But adjust accordingly to the taste of nungu.
  • You can also increase the lychee according to your preference.
  • This recipe can be only prepared with lychee or with nungu or combined.
