Flax Seed Paruppu Podi / Powder

FlaxSeedPowderForRice

Flaxseed Paruppu podi/Powder is simple and healthy rice accompaniment and it is prepared with flaxseed and toor dal (split pigeon peas). All you need to do is dry roast the ingredients and grind it. It has shelf life of  about 10 days when refrigerated. Rice and this podi with a dollop of ghee served with papad is a complete meal by itself.

Welcoming you all to the A to Z recipe challenge and now we are in the 6 th alphabet, F. This is one interesting alphabet and the recipe discussion around this alphabet was also very interesting. Amma suggested a recipe which was a diabetic friendly one and I had one in my mind and I told Amma that I am going to go ahead with what I had in my mind. What I thought was – Filter Coffee. It’s not only about the traditional coffee, I also tried the different brews available here in US and started making note of them. But how filter coffee became flaxseed paruppu podi?

Again thanks to my friend JV for reminding me this recipe. Last year I tried this podi and I completely forgot about it. When I was brainstorming about the recipes, the topic turned towards egg substitutes and I told her about flaxseed. That’s when I remembered this recipe . But I was half through my coffee post. But JV and M asked me to postpone it for next month and so here I am with the Flax Seed Paruppu podi recipe. I didn’t mention what recipe my mom suggested right?(Shhh, that’s a secret.) You got to wait for few more weeks.

Flaxseed & Rancid :

FlaxSeeds

Before getting into the recipe, I would like to mention about the storage tips for flaxseeds. We all know that flax seed has high quantity of Omega-3 fatty acids and in turn it helps in lowering the LDL cholesterol levels. The same fatty acids reduces the shelf life of the flax seed. When flax seed goes bad it is called rancid. When their fatty acids breakdown, flax seeds become rancid. So either store the flax seeds in the fridge or in freezer.

How do you find if a flax seed has turned into a Rancid? Try tasting few seeds. If it has mild nutty flavor, then its good. If it has strong odor and if its bitter, then it has turned into a rancid. The funny thing is, I started to eat flax seed for checking its bitterness and now I got so used to it and love eating them raw.

  1. Now I’m eager to know about that recipe.. Come on spill the beans :) Waiting for your coffee post too!
Love flaxseed podi.. I usually add garlic but this sounds nice and simple :)

    • Thanks GB. That one is with methi.. Will post soon. ;-) The amount garlic usage is very less in our household. Atleast amma used shallots for health reasons and garlic is only for me and appa. She doesn’t eat till date. Same with M’s household. As long as garlic is invisible both M n vaandu are fine. If not all the garlics will be in my plate. I use garlic only for some curries and biryanis.

Would love hear back from you. Drop in your feedback and comments. Thanks
