Ellu Urundai | Nut Free Sesame Seed Balls | 2 in 1 recipe

Here is a simple toddler/kids friendly snack that is perfect for school snacks. When you have snack turns in school, you have to be really careful about the ingredients. Most schools here in US prefer nut free snacks. So here is one such recipe Nut free sesame seed balls or as we say in Tamil, Ellu Urundai. As we use black sesame seeds for pooranum and kozhukattai filling, I go with white sesame seeds. But you can alternate between these two.

SesameSeedsBalls

For the alphabet E, I didn’t have any second thoughts. During pongal/Sankranti we prepare this sweet ellu urundai or sesame seed balls and this was first recipe that I prepared first for this A-Z challenge. This was also sent as a part of IMC’s Jan month Treasure Box Recipe. As I was over enthusiastic at that time, prepared two types of the sesame seed balls. First one is similar to brittles prepared with whole sesame seeds and the next one is the traditional powdered sesame seed balls. So posting both the methods here. Both methods are easy and can be prepared within 30 minutes.

PS: I am revisiting all my Ugadi recipes in my FB page. Please do visit and here are the archives. :-)

Method 1:

SesameSeedBalls

In this method, we use the whole sesame seeds and slight cook it with honey and make balls with the help of rice flour. It is pretty much similar to the sesame seed brittles.

Ingredients:

Ingredients

  • White Sesame Seeds – 1 cup (If you can find roasted white sesame seeds, you can go for it too)
  • Honey – ¼ cup
  • Maple Syrup – 3 tbsps
  • A handful of raisins
  • Rice flour – 3 tbsps

Steps:

  • Dry roast white sesame seeds till they brown.
  • Now to that add the honey, maple syrup and raisins.

Step2

  • In medium heat, simmer this for 3 to 4 minutes. This simmering helps to mold the balls easily.

  • Let it cool to Luke warm temperature.
  • Rub your palms with Rice flour and start making balls or shapes of your choice.

Notes:

  • Instead of maple syrup, corn syrup can be used too.
  • Start making the balls when the sesame seed mixture is luke warm. The rice flour helps in setting it up.

Love the both ways of making sesame balls. Would sure give them a go! Awesome share, Srividya! :)

  2. Yummy….amma makes these every month on one of her fasting days… She loves them…but her version is slighty different…will post it soon… Thanks for sharing two different versions… Will show this to amma so that she can alternate with your versions ….

  3. Wow, you have sesame balls 2-ways, very nice :-) I love both the versions. First one with the whole sesame seeds and maple syrup looks more for adults and the smooth second one I’m sure kids will love.

Would love hear back from you. Drop in your feedback and comments. Thanks
