Kumbakonam Kadappa – Tamil Nadu Special


I cannot skip Tamil Nadu while representing food from Indian States. I wanted to something regional specific and this time when I went to Chennai I saw Kumbakonam filter coffee shops everywhere. I was checking with my cousin brother who is from kumbakonam and were  discussing about the filter coffee (this needs its own post) or as we say kaapi and during that discussion he was mentioning about the kadappa recipe too. This kadappa is very popular in kumbakonam and surrounding areas I believe. This kadappa is served along with idly or dosa. I wanted to try this recipe right away and adapted this from Sharmis Passions. I did change the ingredient portions and made it less garlicky. It was pretty much like Tirunelveli Sodhi except for the masalas and coconut milk.


Kadapa recipe is super simple. Just boil potatoes and moong dhal together. Meanwhile grind the coconut, garlic, green chilly and fennel seeds. Now mix it all together and cook it along with onions and masalas.

To Pressure Cook
  1. Moong dhal - 1/4 cup
  2. Potatoes - 2
  3. Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
  4. Gingelly oil - 1/2 tsp
  5. Water - 3 cups
To Grind
  1. Coconut - 4 tbsps
  2. Fennel Seeds - 1 tsp
  3. Garlic - 2 cloves
  4. Green chilly -2
Other Ingredients
  1. Onion - 1
  2. Oil - 1 tbsp
  3. Mustard seeds - 2 tsps
  4. Cloves - 2
  5. Bay Leaf - 1
  6. Cinnamon Stick - 1/2 inch piece
  7. Curry leaves - 1 strand
  8. Salt - 1.5 tsp
  1. Cut the potatoes into halves.
  2. Pressure cook the moong dhal along with chopped potatoes, turmeric and 1/2 gingelly oil.
  3. Let it cool and peel the potato skin and mash the potatoes and moong dhal nicely.
  4. Meanwhile grind the coconut, fennel seeds, garlic and green chilly into smooth paste.
  5. Now heat the kadai and add oil.
  6. Once the oil is hot add mustard seeds, bay leaf, cinnamon and cloves.
  7. As the mustard seeds start to splutter add the curry leaves and onions.
  8. Cook till the onions turn translucent.
  9. Then add the coconut mixture and cook the raw smell goes and oil gets seperated.
  10. Now add the mashed potatoes and the moong dhal mixture and salt.
  11. Mix it well and bring it boil. That’s it. Kadappa is ready.
  1. You can boil the potatoes and moong dhal separately. It doesn’t need to together always.
  2. The traditional recipe doesn’t call for tomatoes and other veggies so that the gravy is in white color. But you can modify this recipe and add veggies too.
